How to use this calculator

What this tool compares

The do-it-yourself value cost is materials plus the number of hours multiplied by the value you assign to your time. We compare that with the quoted outsourcing price. The difference shows which option has the lower combined cash-and-time value cost under your assumptions.

The value of time is personal

An hour is not always worth your wage. If you would otherwise work and earn an additional $30, your opportunity cost might be around that amount. If you enjoy the task or would not earn money during that time, the value may be much lower. Try more than one assumption.

Cash savings are different from time savings

Doing it yourself can cost less in actual cash even when outsourcing wins on total value. This calculator shows the extra cash required to outsource separately. It does not suggest that hypothetical time value is money arriving in your bank account.

When not to use this estimate alone

Quality, safety, skill, time pressure, warranties and trust also matter. Certain jobs are better handled by qualified professionals regardless of the arithmetic, including electrical, medical and specialized legal work.

Think about it: If a task takes five hours, you value your time at $30 per hour, and materials cost $20, the DIY value cost is $170. A $120 professional quote might be a better use of your time — although it requires more cash.
A note about estimates. This is a planning tool, not personalized financial, tax, legal or automotive advice. Results depend on your inputs and simplifying assumptions. When stakes are high, verify the numbers using primary sources or a qualified professional.
