How to use the square footage calculator

Calculate the area

Multiply length by width for each rectangular section, then multiply by the number of identical sections. A 14 ft × 12 ft room is 168 sq ft.

Material quantity and waste

Add the selected waste percentage to the floor area when estimating materials. At 10% waste, 168 sq ft needs approximately 184.8 sq ft of material.

When to measure sections separately

Irregular rooms, stairs, alcoves and angled sections may need to be measured as several rectangles or other shapes, then combined. This estimator does not automatically handle cutouts, tile box rounding, installation, taxes or other project costs.

Check the assumptions. These are educational estimates using the figures you enter. For important decisions, verify the figures against official requirements or your own records.
